The Montrealbased company reported net earnings of $76.3 million or 68 cents per share for the quarter ended March 14, up more than 41 per cent from yearearlier net earnings of $54 million or 48 cents per share.
The company also reported a 7.5 per cent spike in total sales, which rose to $2.55 billion.
growth is the result of our continued very solid performance in Quebec and our improving results in Ontario, where our merchandise initiatives, store renovations and better execution in both conventional and discount have gained traction, he said during a conference call.
The company has converted 89 of 159 stores to the Metro banner. The conversion of Loeb stores will begin Friday in Ottawa and be completed by midJune. After A stores are rebranded, the entire process will be completed by the end of the year.
Conversion is helping to improve sales, but is just one of the factors working in Metro favour, the company said, as it gained traction in Quebec as rival Provigo endured strikes at several of its locations.
This year results are also markedly better than the weak performance of a year ago, when a price war in Ontario and internal IT problems put a damper on the company results.
The chain performance beat analyst expectations. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters had forecast adjusted EPS of 61 cents, up from 51 cents a year ago.
Like other supermarkets, Metro said it is benefiting from the difficult economic environment as consumers increasingly eat at home and shop at discount stores Food Basics in Ontario and Super C in Quebec.
