Prime Minister Julia Gillard makes last major speech at National Press Club
Ms Gillard has addressed the National Press Club in Canberra on why voters should give Labor another term. She has focused on the economy and painted the Coalition as reckless spenders.
She has said the election is "an absolute cliffhanger" and there is a "very, very real risk" that Australians could wake up on Sunday morning with Tony Abbott as prime minister.
In a new announcement, she has said Labor's paid parental leave scheme will be widened to allow fathers and other carers to have more time at home after the birth of a baby.
Labor would provide two weeks of parental leave at the minimum wage currently $570 from July 1, 2012, the Prime Minister has said. "Most working fathers take some time off work . but this is usually for a short period only," she has said.
Ms Gillard has said an estimated 220,[url=http://www.sport.fr/economie/airmax.html]air max hommes[/url],000 fathers and carers would be eligible for the payment, at an estimated overall cost of $90 million a year.
Labor's full parental leave scheme offers mothers 18 weeks leave at minumum wage. The Coalition's scheme offers 26 weeks at the mother's real wage, up to a cap of $150,000. Mr Abbott has called it a "visionary reform" and has accused Labor of wishing they had been more generous in the first place.
Ms Gillard has refused to say when the party came up with the new plan.
Ms Gillard has also pushed her campaign themes of Labor's response to the global financial crisis and broadband. She has ridiculed Mr Abbott's broadband plan and claimed he merely thinks faster internet means faster Facebook.
"You can only imagine his excitement when he finally finds YouTube," she has said. "I will build the national broadband network, Mr Abbott will not. It could not be clearer."
On climate change, she has reiterated her promises to offer "record investment" on solar and renewable energy. But there was no mention of an emissions trading scheme or her citizen's assembly plan in her prepared remarks.
Asked about the assembly plan, she dismissed its poor reception as "tweet, tweet, tweet" but has insisted it will go ahead if Labor wins.
Mr Abbott had set climate change and asylum seekers as the two tests for Ms Gillard in her speech.
He has said the arrival of another boat in Australian waters takes the year's total to 86, equalling the previous record for arrivals in an entire year. "So obviously the RuddGillard government has achieved an ugly and unfortunate record," he has said during a campaign stop in Brisbane. "She talked about a carbon price, the only way to get a carbon price is with a carbon tax or an emissions trading scheme," he has said.
Asked about the future of the ETS, she used her answer to put the focus back on Mr Abbott and the Coalition's "carrotonly" policy of offering incentives but no penalties for polluters to clean up their act.
She has said she understands voter cynicism of politicians and their promises during election campaigns, but has urged voters to look at her record. "Judge me on who I am and what I've done. I'm happy for everybody to get out the tick sheet and say promises made and promises delivered," she has said.
The only broken promise she has acknowledged has been on providing more childcare centres, blaming the collapse of ABC Learning Centres. Labor has previously said the 200+ extra centres promised are no longer needed because there is not enough demand.
Ms Gillard has also joked about the distractions of the campaign, including her reported mispronunciation of her opponent's name. "We've spent time in this election campaign on the perceived political strategy of me not saying 'Mr Abbott' but saying 'Mr Rabbitt' what a cunning, cunning plan that must have been."
Every minute will count for both leaders as they head into a frenzied last two days of campaigning, with polls showing Labor has a slight lead.

Thank god during this world economic down turn my son still has a job, due to Labours stimulus package, I admit I voted Lib last election little knowing there was a world recesion looming, thank god for LABOUR, they kept the ball rooling instead of thighting the purse strings,to think of the unemployment there could have been otherwise . My friends daughter got into a home with the first homeowners as did many other young people,which helped the building trade, I think a lot of people are forgetting all Labour have done, m its true what they say eaten bread is soon forgotten mores the pity

the NBN is infrastructure that will be around for 3050 YEARS. Therefore $5000 is a SMALL PRICE TO PAY to have a broadband network that will last well into this century.
It makes the whole system much more "upgradable" with massive capacity, something we do not have now, and WILL NOT GET with the Liberals bandaid plan (an ignorant plan by an ignorant political party).
The Liberal system will be running at full capacity, falling over endlessly and will be well outdated in less than 5 years.
As I work in education technology and learning, I know which one I want. and which one will be better for the education and benefit of all Australians.
