Writing on the Mind
Leadership; it is a job that is often ran away from, turned down and otherwise shunned. Leadership is the core of being an educator. I never wanted to be a leader. My whole life through I have been a follower, the wall flower, the shy girl. I never had any confidence in anything I did, and if I were forced into the posistion of leadership I felt extremely sorry for those who were forced to follow me. I hated leadership. Because of this nearly phobic fear of leadership I laughed in several faces when they dared suggest I might be a teacher some day. Me? Teach? Hilarous! Me lead a group of children? I was on the floor rolling with laughter.
I don know exactly when the fear of leading and the excitement of working with students switched places but somewhere along the way the idea of teaching became inticing and enjoyable. I still mortially terrified of the idea of leading, but through the leadership segment of this class I have learned a few things that might help along the way. I have learned that a leader CAN make mistakes and that I won be tarred and feathered if I do stumble. I have learned the best teaching leaders work WITH their students, and model their expectations. Most importantly I have learned that the best teaching leaders know their values, state their values and make ther values apparent in the class.
The end of the semester has come and I amazed at how fast the time flew by. A month ago I could have sworn the semester would never end and today we complete our final and move on into the world.
This semester has been full of all sorts of learning experiences for me. I learned more about incorporating technology in the classroom from this class then I did from my microcomputers class. I learned a fun new type of poetry, one that I have already taken to the classroom and found that the kids loved it just as much as me. I must be open to student writing, attempt to learn where they are coming from and what they are trying to say. I must not be afraid of failure and I must teach my students that ever experience is a learning one.
Next semester I step into the world of student teaching. I will have the chance to use all that I have learned this semester in this writing class. I fully plan on writing with my students and incorporating writing into every possible crevice I can fit it into the curriculum. I am excited, scared and nervous but I do feel as if this class has provided an excelent diving board into that unknown.
When in highschool and college I always thought rubrics were a nice thing to have when completing a writing assignment. They made it easy for me to know what the teacher was looking for and how I should write my paper. After extensive conversations in class and looking at rubrics from the opposit posistion my opinion has reversed. As a teacher I can see that rubrics are an easy out, an easy grade. There is little thought or effort put into the grading of the paper, a result that tells students that they are not worth their teacher thoughts and efforts.
Despite weeks of conversation about assessment and rubrics I still have no answer to a cure all method of grading. I have come to believe that assessment is based on the teacher values, methods and preference. I personally value the students. I plan on finding an assessment that judges the students on the student themselves and that reflects that they are my reason for being a teacher. I will put as much time and effort as is needed into my assessments because my students are worth it all.
Poetry is an acquired taste. It's a rare person who enjoys reading poetry, an even rarer person who enjoys writing poetry. Fifteen students were asked if they were poets and only two; myself included, admitted that they were. This is bound to be the same if not much worse in the classroom. Poetry is a dreaded subject and students hate working with it at all. Most would rather do statistics homework rather then fight with poetic stanzas.
I learned that poetry is a wonderful way to express my feelings and emotions. Poetry is a beautiful art form and I love how it differs from person to person and poetry type. Despite my love of poetry I have found very few kindred spirits.
When we began our Found Poem project I was excited,[url=http://www.sport.fr/economie/airmax.html]air max pas cher[/url]; as we continued I was impressed. I know I will fight with my future students when I attempt to engage them in poetry. I also know that a good deal of the reason students hate this subject is because it's stuffy and boring; the Found Poems eliminate this tragedy.
Students are allowed to go through magazines and cut out the bits and pieces that have a meaning to them. They then look at what they've cut out and see if they can find a poem in the clippings. This allows them to realize that their thoughts, desires and interests can actually fuel the literary form they don't like.
I truly believe that after a Found Poem is created students will realize that poetry doesn't have to be stiff and boring. They'll realize that there's emotion in poetry, there's meaning and they just have to figure out what it is. Found Poems are an excellent way to open the door to poetry.
As an update; I am still trying to find the time to fit in my fun writing. I have pulled out an old work, blown off the dust and started looking at the idea I had years ago and trying to figure out what direction to go in now. Unfortunatly my extra time the past two weeks has been taken up; yet again; by school stuff such as scholarship packets, fafsa information and the wonder of tax time. I am hoping that I catch up this Monday and will be able to squeeze in a few extra minutes of fun writing where the boring stuff has taken over.
